"Louvre Couture," hard for some to say, but not Daniel Roseberry, the creative director at SCHIAPARELLI SA. He was inspired by a sculpture by Gaston Lachaise in the Jardin des Tuileries and made a lasting impression of his own, which he put on the runway in January of 2024 and is now at the Louvre on view thru August 24th.

“Louvre Couture,” on the first floor of the Richelieu wing, mixes couture, ready-to-wear, and accessories from 1949 to the present with rather older decorative objects, from precious gilded reliquaries to rich woven tapestries.

In the last room dedicated to the Middle Ages, there is a lovely giant, donning an haute couture Schiaparelli wool crepe suit. She is from Schiaparelli's “Inferno” collection, spring 2023. And she is an homage to Lachaise’s “Woman.”

Schiaparelli is just one of 45 houses and designers included in the show, and thanks to Daniel Roseberry, pushes the boundaries of the fashion world, just as Lachaise did the boundaries of his art world of the 1920s/30s.

I made the short video below with clips from Vogue’s “Day in the life with Schiaparelli’s creative director,” in which Roseberry walks us through the Tuileries gardens and shows us the sculpture "Standing Woman," 1932, on loan from the Lachaise Foundation.

As the director of the foundation, I wish to thank all those at the Louvre for their curating and care of the magnificent Tuileries—starting with Marie Laure Bernadac in 2008 and Emmanuelle Héran today. The importance of art in the garden for our collective well being cannot be underestimated.

Laurence des Cars, who is the first female president of the Musée du Louvre, spoke not long ago at the Four Arts in Palm Beach. I am guessing that she mentioned this show as part of her vision for the “Next Century At The Louvre”? 💡💫 I also imagine she mentioned the proposed new entrance…

Olivier Gabet, the director of the Louvre’s decorative arts department also deserves credit as another mastermind behind this brilliant display.

“Louvre Couture,” the pinnacle of art, history, fashion, culture, & craftsmanship. Through 24 August 2025.
